About lake effect
I am using this to display personal photo work that might otherwise sit on my hard drive forever, and my ultimate goal is to present fresh personal work on a regular basis on this site.
The photos that I display here may fall outside the realm of my work as a photojournalist. I think that it is extremely important to photograph the things that catch my eye. So much of the time I am making photos for a specific need, to tell a story, to document a process, to present the key play at a sporting event, or to capture a personality. I hope that this allows for me to practice more of a “free form” type of photography, to make a picture just because of the beautiful light, to create a photo just for the sake of the colors in front of me, or to capture something that evokes a certain mood.
The environment of Lake Superior is unique, powerful, and has a reach that affects a broad area beyond the shores of the lake itself. As much Superior is in the background for the lives of the people that live on and near the lake, it has a continuous subtle effect on the way we think and how we live in its shadow. I find it amazing how many diverse ways the water works into the way of life here. The dynamic, powerful, and forceful presence of the lake is often creates fleeting moments of beauty.
Enjoy the photography and I hope that you check in often to see what is new.

What kind of camera do you use? You photos are amazing!
Yeah, what kind of camera?
Thanks.
I use Canon digital SLR cameras. I have many different lenses including 16-35mm f2.8, 24-70mm f2.8, 70-200 IS f 2.8, 100mm Macro f 2.8, 20mm f2.8, 28mm f1.8, 85mm f1.8, 90mm TS-E f2.8, 400mm IS f2.8, Canon Teleextenders 1.4x and 2.0x, and on rare occasion i will play with my Lensbaby 2.0.
There is the techno geek version of what I use in a nutshell.
To me this is a tool kit and each lens has a different voice. I do not take all this gear with me at once. I chose one maybe two lenses that I think will work for what I am shooting. There has been times when I have seen something that would be awesome with a different lens but that is just the way it is. I try to make the best of the situation with what I have with me at the time.
I am partial to Canon cameras for several reasons. This does not mean that Nikon, Olympus, Pentax, Sony, Leica, Kodak, or any camera would capture images much differently. The camera is just a tool to preserve a vision. Find one that you like. Use it. Have fun.
Thanks for looking.
